SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. What better way for a law firm to celebrate Black History Month, than to have one of today's most influential African American lawyers, Robert L. Harris, speak at its offices. Holland & Knight LLP's Diversity Committee hosted its inaugural Black History Month Celebration for the San Francisco legal community on February 28, 2008.

The focus of Mr. Harris's talk was centered around overcoming the legal injustices of the past, such as Dred Scott v. Sandford and Plessy v. Ferguson, by victories such as Brown v. Board of Education. Harris also discussed how the exceptionally talented Black lawyers such as Charles Hamilton Houston and Thurgood Marshall trailblazed the path for lawyers, such as himself, to continue their work towards equal justice under the law.

Finally, Harris challenged the members of the audience to continue Charles Houston's mission, which is to be "either a social engineer or a parasite on society." As result, many of the attendees have recommitted themselves to serving their respective communities in order to combat any injustice that may exist.
